Boosting Metabolism to Lose Weight

Many women are under the false assumption that eating less will help them lose weight. While it is true that eating the right foods at a set caloric intake will result in weight loss, when done wrong this can actually hinder the weight loss process. The reason for this is that eating too little can result in a sluggish metabolism. When this happens the body begins storing fat rather than expending it. Basically, what is happening when you starve your body of nutrients, and a certain amount of calories is that anything you put into your body is then saved for the next period of starvation. This is the body’s natural defense for starving and the only way to counter that is to treasure the body, over time, that you will not be starving it.

Eating small portions of healthy foods every few hours is a great way to boost the metabolism. Also, skipping breakfast is detrimental to weight loss. Some people believe that the body will use its reserves if breakfast is missed, causing a higher caloric burn, however this is not true. The metabolism needs to be “jump started” everyday and breakfast is the ideal way to accomplish this. Another good thing to do is to fluctuate the amount of calories that you take in each day. For example, one day eat a very low calorie diet and the next eat a bit more, this is a good way to “trick” the metabolism into speeding up and is called calorie shifting.
